There exist myriad motivations to embrace sustainability in our choices; an endeavor that not only resonates with our hearts but also safeguards the essence of what we hold dear. My reminiscences take me back to the days of yore when I, a young soul, found myself captivated by the kaleidoscopic spectrum of costume jewelry adorning my grandmother’s ensembles. Those candy-colored keepsakes, forever etched in my memory, ignited a passion that continues to blaze brightly – a passion for the vintage jewelry that graces my designs today.

Perhaps it was the hours spent engrossed in tinkering and disassembling broken electronics on rainy afternoons in the snug corners of my father’s basement workshop that first kindled the creative fire within me. From those moments of experimentation, a realm of artistry emerged, each stroke of genius taking shape on that very workbench. It is these very influences that have sculpted the profound mission of Hopscotch Couture – a mission to resurrect once-beloved vintage discoveries into new, one-of-a-kind treasures, each radiating its own unique splendor. What sets these designs apart is their origin in the materials at hand, rather than being born from a preconceived sketch.

I confess, this facet of the creative process is what resonates most with me; an exhilarating dance of surprise and delight with each finished masterpiece. Some pieces hold me captive with their allure, making bidding adieu a challenge I often succumb to – a well-guarded secret of mine. Surprisingly, it was not the call of sustainability that initially led me to employ vintage and antique materials; rather, it was the pursuit of quality. Time has bestowed a remarkable endurance upon so many of my timeless discoveries, be it in the form of jewelry or attire. It’s the peerless quality, the exquisite craftsmanship of days gone by, that continues to weave its allure. Take, for instance, the antique hardware dating back to the early 1800s – intricate pieces boasting lion motifs, intricate florals, sinuous scrolls, and delicate birds. These ornate treasures once graced the cabinets and furnishings of the Victorian era, each bearing a patina that time alone can bestow. My heart brims with affection for these remnants of history.

And then, let us delve into the sensory symphony that accompanies each piece. Antique materials carry a weightiness, a robustness, a richness of detail that defies comparison. The gentle caress of embroidery against supple linen, the intricate patterns that emerge from their union – a sensory delight. When velvet enters the scene, rest assured it’s a vintage marvel; for its superiority stands unquestioned, much like the plethora of other treasures I unearth. Ribbons and lace, scoured from every corner of the globe, hold a special place in my heart. Handcrafted lace, a testament to the artistry of diverse cultures, crochet ribbons that exude softness, and silk ribbons adorned with embroidered tales – they all find their way into my creations. The velvet touch of the embroidered silk ribbons resonates deeply with my soul, harking back to my grandfathers’ days in the Paterson silk mills. A reminiscence of scrap ribbons as vibrant as paintings, once brought home, now finds itself cherished through my work. Even the historical ribbons, bearing political messages of eras past, possess an enchanting allure. Often, these materials and ribbons arrive in pristine condition, as if untouched by time. Occasionally, I stumble upon half-finished art projects, a testament to a creative spirit left behind. Consider the strands of glass beads that crossed oceans from Holland – a legacy of a crafty mother-in-law. In reimagining these, I hope to honor her spirit, weaving her memory into each new creation, showcased across continents in numerous photoshoots.

My delight in unearthing and transforming these aged treasures resides in the crafting of wearable artworks, designed to endure generations. Each piece, a masterpiece in its own right, carries the guarantee of exclusivity, shaped in part by the very materials that constitute it. And, it’s worth noting, it’s a journey anchored in sustainability. In my quest for Victorian splendors, I’ve also discovered a means to extend kindness towards our planet, and a tribute to those who left behind these legacies. It is my aspiration that I’ve done justice to them all.

In finding my passion for Victorian finds, I also found a way to be kinder to our planet and to the loved ones who left these treasures behind. I hope I have honored them all. In every stitch, in every bead, in every thread lies a narrative of the past, a celebration of craftsmanship, and a commitment to a more conscious future.
