As I worked on this first painting, I discovered something I never knew about butterfly fish: many species are known to form strong pair bonds and often remain close to the same partner for long periods of time, swimming side by side as they move through the reef. Learning this stopped me in my tracks. Suddenly, they felt like the perfect representation of my grandparents. Through all of life’s joys, hardships, and uncertainties, they remained devoted to one another. In this painting, the butterfly fish symbolizes that enduring partnership—a quiet loyalty, a shared journey, and a love that stayed constant through the changing currents of life. Their presence serves as a tribute to the bond my grandparents shared and the lasting impression that bond left on those who loved them. They were the only example of true love I had as a child. Being with them was just the best.

Now in the center of these roses will be the Pilot fish, white with tones of blue and vibrant black stripes. They will make a striking contrast to this painting and great meaning emotionally.
